WEB International Workers Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day, is a celebration of laborers and the labor movement. While most of Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas observe the holiday on May 1, the United States is one of the few countries that does not.

Variations in Celebration

WEB In the United States and Canada, Labor Day is a holiday observed on the first Monday of September. Some countries, such as the UK and Ireland, celebrate it on the first Monday in May.

Significance of May 1

WEB May Day commemorates the historic struggles and gains made by workers and the labor movement. The date was chosen to honor the Haymarket Affair of 1886 in Chicago, a violent confrontation between workers and police that resulted in the deaths of several people.
