Alfa Romeo Tonale Mild-Hybrid: Excitement Challenged

The compact SUV set to bring more options to the segment

A mild hybrid version of the Alfa Romeo Tonale is currently undergoing testing, but we've already had the opportunity to experience the mild hybrid variant.

The Tonale is a compact SUV that will slot into Alfa Romeo's lineup below the Stelvio. It's based on the same platform as the Jeep Compass, but it features unique styling and a more premium interior. The Tonale is also the first Alfa Romeo to be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The mild hybrid version of the Tonale that we tested was powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 48-volt electric motor. The system produces a combined 160 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Tonale's mild hybrid system is designed to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. The electric motor can provide assistance to the engine during acceleration, and it can also power the car at low speeds. The system also allows the car to coast with the engine off, which further improves fuel economy.

In our testing, the Tonale's mild hybrid system delivered on its promises. The car was able to achieve an average of 30 mpg in combined driving, and it emitted just 125 g/km of CO2. The electric motor provided a noticeable boost to acceleration, and it also allowed the car to coast with the engine off for short periods of time.

Overall, the Alfa Romeo Tonale Mild-Hybrid is a promising addition to the compact SUV segment. It offers a good blend of performance, fuel economy, and emissions. We look forward to testing the plug-in hybrid version of the Tonale in the coming months to see how it compares.
